Understanding Your Statistical Logs
All our customers have the option
of having analog reports emailed to them monthly. This page is here
to help you interpret what your logs actually mean.
A cut down version of one of
the reports is shown below. (The text is italics has been added by
us to explain what each item means.)
Web Server Statistics for www.yourdomain.com
=====================================
The name of the site - useful if you have more than one Web site with
us.
Program started at Fri-01-May-2002 03:29 local time. Analysed requests
from Mon-01-April-2002 00:19 to Thu-30-Apr-2002 00:43 (30.0 days).
The dates for the statistics in question. In this case, the statistics
are for the month of April 2002, and were re-set again for the following
month.
Total successful requests: 55,146
The total number of files transferred from the server (where your Web
site resides) to another machine (eg. the computer of a visitor to your
site). If a visitor views a page containing four graphics, this would
count as five requests (one for the page and one request for each of the
graphics). Strictly speaking, this is the number of 'hits' although many
other Web designers use that term as if it were the number of visitors
or page requests.
Average successful requests per day: 1,838
The average number of hits per day. In this case, the total successful
requests figure of 55,146 divided by the number of days' analysis (30).
Total successful requests for
pages: 3,928
This excludes requests for graphics and is therefore a more useful
figure than total hits for assessing the popularity of a site.
Total failed requests: 176
Don't be alarmed by failed requests. These are not uncommon. Admittedly
they can be caused by out-of-date links, but more usually they are caused
by visitors to your site not waiting for a page to fully load, and clicking
on a link before data has fully transferred. Only if this figure is unusually
high should you feel the need to have your site checked over.
Number of distinct hosts served: 2,662
|
This is the most meaningful number
to the layperson and the one we recommend that you monitor.
It is the best approximation for the number of visitors to the site.
|
Total data transferred: 126.537 Mbytes
Since our package offers a generous allowance of up to 3 Gbytes of
data transfer (or bandwidth) per month, this figure is irrelevant to the
vast majority.
