WHITEHAVEN NEWS, Thursday 17 August 2000 Gurning goes hi-tech with internet contest Egremont's age-old tradition of gurning is going hi-tech with the launch of the world's first on-line competition. The new venture has no connection with the town's annual Crab Fair which over the years has attracted gurners from around the world. But Crab Fair organisers have no objection to the Web site competition and have even offered any help they can give. "It doesn't affect us really, in fact, it will give gurning even more publicity, which is good. Alan has talked to the organisers and said he would be happy to give them advice," said Karen Clements, wife of Crab Fair secretary, Alan. The ugliest faces in cyberspace can be found on www.cumbria.uk.com where competitors can email pictures of themselves for consideration by the judges. A Cumbrian beauty kit, along with the title of Gurner of the Month, is up for grabs. "It's been extremely popular so far, with people from all over the world sending in pictures. Our very first Gurner of the Month is from Australia," said competition organiser Dr. Paul Johnson from The Dedicated Partnership. "The gurning competition is a small part of a much larger Web site, which is all about Cumbria. We were looking for something that would catch people's imagination and help promote the county as a whole." Secretary Alan Clements has appealed to the public for more helpers on Crab Fair day on Saturday, September 16. "We need helpers for the event. We do have a dedicated team but you can never have too many helpers," he said. Contact Alan on 01946 821554.
